FROM OUR HANDS TO YOUR CUP

Grounds Costa Rica is a specialty coffee importer. We believe in a new, better way of sourcing specialty coffee. We aid farmers and roasters in their trade  journey and foster direct trade relationships.

Why? Because the specialty market deserves more transparency and collaboration while at the same time prioritising quality.

The Challenge?

Given the smaller scale of specialty businesses and their purchase amounts, its pretty much impossible to manage an own import and logistics. While at the same time, it's the specialty field that actually cares and pays attention to the origin and traceability of their supply chain.

Our solution?

We created a Community-Based Coffee import called #jointheboat. We make direct trade possible by facilitating the logistics and where a group of roasters share a shipping container.

We shorten the supply chain by eliminating any unnecessary middlemen, while at the same time involving the farmer on the trade side and the roaster on the production side of the chain.

Our partnership with Gaia Artisan Coffee aids them in their goal of continued coffee excellence, while also encouraging opportunities to expand their farms, technology, businesses and knowledge in a rapidly changing international market.

It is our main mission to help farmers and their families by raising the bar and lead them on their journey to conquer the international market. We work hand in hand by building a bridge between the producer and international roasters, and foster long- lasting trade relationships.

THE farms

The farms are located in the West Central Valley under the most ideal conditions, at an altitude of 1300-1800 masl. It is an area of fertile lands of volcanic origin which gives special characteristics to the coffee, optimal acidity-body balance, aroma and an identity of origin.

In the cup, one can usually discover tastes of chocolate and honey, all the way down to the elegant complexity of flowers and fruits like mandarin, apricot and even tropical fruits like papaya and pineapple.

Super interesting that we were given the opportunity to do the quality control for these coffees. It was incredibly educational to taste so many Costa Rica's side by side. The Cup of Excellence lots really stood out. It's actually crazy that such a high quality coffee comes from Costa Rica and they are not so easy to find in Europe. The range of fruit and sweetness is unprecedented. We found the quality of the honeys especially rock-solid. We would like to continue to monitor these beautiful coffees in the future.

By taking part in #jointheboat, Grounds Costa Rica will be donating 5 euro cents per kilo purchase to our coffee reforestation program. We will be donating at least 800 F1 hybrid coffee plants to the farmer community of Naranjo. Hopefully you can join us on our trip to Costa Rica in 2022 to make this donation together!

Many Costa Rican plantations have been affected by coffee leaf rust and this has been threatening the source of income of many farmers. F1 hybrids are an exciting development in the coffee industry, they combine high cup quality with high resistance to disease. Experimental varieties like these offer a great opportunity for the future of coffee farming in a changing climate.
